How do you play Cultris?

I think, many new players would like to know, which configurations are used by the top player, so that they don't waste time trying out wrong settings. Here some questions I'd like to have answered:

  • Which key bindings and fingers do you use?
  • Which spawning orientations do you use?
  • Which values do you use for Delay and Repeat speed?
  • Do you use 1-step-finesse or 2-step-finesse, or none of them?

1-step-finesse means, that you try to use only 1 keystroke for moving the pieces left or right. You keep holding down left/right until the active piece is in the desired column. This means Repeat speed mustn't be all the way to the right.

2-step-finesse means, that you use 2 left/right keystrokes at most, where with one keystroke you move the piece either 1 step (tapping) or completely to the wall (holding). To do so, you have to use autorepeat in not-intuitive situations and sometimes rotate after autorepeat. Set Repeat speed all the way to the right.

----------------

Here my settings. Don't take them too serious. I am no C2 expert (100 BPM in average). I just want other people to know, what I expect them to post.

Right hand:

  • forefinger: left arrow for moving left
  • middle finger: right arrow for moving right

Left hand:

  • forefinger: down arrow for dropping down
  • middle finger: up arrow for rotating clockwise
  • ring finger: right shift for rotating counter-clockwise
  • little finger: slash for moving down

Spawning orientations: all West (see image)

Not the best setup for C2, as the J,L,S and Z pieces are spawned completely on the left half of the playing field, so rather long way to the right side.

No finesse. Most times I am just tapping the keys. I only keep holding keys, when I want to move the pieces to the walls. 3.5 keystrokes per block in average. Repeat speed 9, delay 5.

----------------

Nowadays, I play with that setting:

  • Delay = 4.5, Repeat speed = infinity (all the way to the right)
  • spawning orientations = all East (see image)
  • special case of 2 step finesse, roughly 2.8 to 2.9 keys per piece (125 BPM in average)

Controls:

  • Numpad 1 = move left (right index finger)
  • Numpad 5 = move right (right middle finger)
  • Numpad 6 = move down (right ring finger)
  • C = drop piece (left index finger)
  • D = rotate clockwise (left middle finger)
  • S = rotate counterclockwise (left ring finger)
  • A = rotate 180 degrees (left small finger)

Let me summarize the results of this thread:

  • Most people set Delay between 4 and 6 and Repeat speed most way to the right.
  • Nobody uses 1 step finesse. Some people use 2 step finesse, others tap 3 times and only autorepeat if they want to drop the pieces directly on the wall.
  • Most people use Drop piece and Move left/right on different hands. This may be a result of Drop piece being Spacebar per default.
  • Spawning directions don't really matter. If you want to play other multiplayer Tetris games, leave them unchanged, but switch the colors:

No finesse. Most times I am just tipping the keys. I only keep holding keys, when I want to move the pieces to the walls.

Re: How do you play Cultris?

I had to play a few games to see how I play. :)

If I need to move a piece to the wall or one column from it, I hold down the key until it hits the wall. Otherwise I move the piece one column per keypress/-release until I have the piece where I want (quite often I accidently move it too far and have to move it back one column).

right hand:
forefinger: left arrow = moving left
ring finger: right arrow = moving right
middle finger: up arrow = counterclockwise rotate
middle finger (again, but hardly used): down arrow = moving down
thumb: right control = chat and stats

left hand:
forefinger: Q = clockwise rotate
thumb: space = drop

I don't recommend this, and I would change it if I wasn't so used to it.

Re: How do you play Cultris?

i use these settings about 10 years now :

im a left handed person so.. i use only 1 hand and 1 finger for drop the fastest possible. my drop is focus by one arm

left hand:
forefinger : W key for AZERTY keyboard or Z for a QWERTY = Drop

right hand:
forefinger: NumPAD 4 = moving left
ring finger: NumPAD 6 = moving right
middle finger: NumPAD 8 = clockwise rotate
middle finger: NumPAD 5 = counterclockwise rotate
middle finger: NumpPAD 2 = moving down

smiley

i show the difference between 2 positions Z's and stick

in global, i press for move left/right but for move to the border, i hold and sometimes for the Stick Block ( l ) i hold to the border and i come back -1 collums.

actual : smiley

Re: How do you play Cultris?

Thank you for your numerous answers. So you can be really fast with a similar setup like I have. I thought, you would have to use finesse or choose a very short repeat delay. Nobody with 3 or less?

All of you have in common, that you move the pieces with your right hand (ring and forefinger) and drop the pieces with your left hand. And most people choose vertical spawning positions, probably for making 2-gap combos.

Re: How do you play Cultris?

I'm wondering if ppl use vertical spawning because it's default on Cultris. My habits with horizontal spawning comes from another tetris game, but it also gives you an advantage if you are playing at the top of the field.
