Looking for a soulmate

Me - A fun-loving, down-to-earth Tetris with 2 kids from 3 different developers seeks an intelegint webmaster who loves to laugh. Must be in shape! I'm temporarily 50 kilos overweight, but don't worry, I plan to loose the weight right after I finish these fries! I'm 49 but I look MUCH younger! I don't have a pic, but trust me, you won't be disappointed! I'm a Libra so I live life to the fullest! Also, I will release game updates when I find you.

You - Know how to set up a CMS or build websites from scratch. Are willing to work "for the exposure". Know how to migrate a MojoPortal site to the new system. You want to keep doing this for the next 25 years of your life. I get along best with Geminis! Must have a big heart! Your website must be ASP.NET-based or hostable in Azure App service (Java, Node.js, Python, PHP, or Ruby).

Please post your answer here. Include a link to a website you built, or a prototype of our new website.

Re: Looking for a soulmate

Here is my website: blog.rshobu.net

I built that website using the LAMP stack and wordpress.  I am currently working on another web application which also uses LAMP stack but instead of using PHP I'm using Python.

I am also familiar with git.  I have setup and currently host my repos in my vps.

I have never built an ASP.NET based website but I would like to learn.  Installed Visual Studio Community edition 3 months ago and I have yet to use it lol

Re: Looking for a soulmate

It appears that any new developments have stalled, once again. We're still looking somebody managing the public face of Cultris II... Anyone up for the job?

Re: Looking for a soulmate

Hello Simon. I find it very interesting that the people who I thought were in charge for this did not update you, blaatap, and others.

Up to this day, I thought, KB and Balu were assigned (https://cultris.net/)
But it appears that that isn't true anymore. What exactly is the status?
Would those efforts be in vain?

About the requirement part, it seems to be hard to find anybody who is even in touch with ASP.NET. Also, for the Azure part. I think nobody here knows how to ensure that it will work under that specific platform.
You say CMS, and mean "CMS that works in Azure App service".

First off, Azure needs a subscription, where you put your credit card or other "insurance" first. That is very off-putting.
About Azure + MojoPortal, I think we can talk.

But who is going to provide an Azure area to test the CMS in, and second, make it in a way thats suiting?

Wouldn't it be easier to fund a new skin / design for the current page,  along with some re-arrangement?

There are also legal-problems. For instance, I think, I'm not allowed to create websites for others [...]

Re: Looking for a soulmate

Huh, I thought I had posted my reply several days ago ready... Let's try this again:

  • I'm not and was not involved in https://cultris.net/, but applaud the effort! The site appears to be built on top of this site, so it doesn't work on its own. The site doesn't look very beginner-friendly, when it should be our primary focus to grow the community. That being said, the invitation to help build a new https://gewaltig.net goes out to everybody, including the people behind https://cultris.net/ ! I think KB and Balu would do a great job.
  • According to some statistics, ASP.NET is the second-most used web framework.
  • Azure is the second-biggest cloud offering.
  • It's easy to check whether something will work on Azure App Service: The documentation is public, and it's free to sign up. As written in the first post, Azure App Service can host ASP.NET, Java, Node.js, Python, PHP and Ruby.
  • All cloud providers I'm aware of require a credit card to sign up.
  • I will provide an Azure area to build and test a new website.
  • The two most recent releases of MojoPortal are from 2018 and 2017. There is not much development going on and some things don't work as well as they should. For that reason I'd like to move away from MojoPortal. Also, being a webmaster entails other things, for example community management or keeping the site up to date. Redoing the theme doesn't help with any of these issues.
  • Why not? [...]

Re: Looking for a soulmate

I'm kind of curious why people have focused so heavily on the ASP.NET part. I understand that some competence is needed to migrate stuff from one system to another. Though, given that other programming languages/frameworks are namedropped in both the opening post and the latest post, I figure that as long as we're talking reasonably popular frameworks, alternatives are acceptable and can be tested in the provided Azure area? The primary reason to push for ASP.NET for the new codebase seems to be purely because it's popular, and it's not impossible to find someone else to help out if someone drops out. There are plenty of other (more exciting? :p) frameworks and languages that can fulfill the same criteria, I think.

Generally, I'm curious about the scope of this stuff. I'm not sure what kind of tendrils and tentacles MojoPortal has, I take it that it has some SQL-database attached to it, and interacts with the game database in the form of accounts.. What else is going on?

Re: Looking for a soulmate

Yep, you're right. Other frameworks can be tested on Azure. I can help with migration. And there's is already a migrated database copy ready to go. Apart from user logins there's not much more interaction between the game backend and the website.

Re: Looking for a soulmate

It initially sounds like a relatively okay project on a technical level. Why is it that there's not been any more involvement from others? I can understand that when you ask for help from the few people who are still personally invested in this game's welfare, the pool of people who are competent and potentially interested isn't exactly brimming.

I'm thinking about the work KB and Balu put into cultris.net. While I get your concerns about it not being very beginner friendly, it displays a lot about what a typically seasoned player is interested in. Would you not say that getting involved with the project in some way, perhaps giving them pointers in terms of what you'd like to see in a new version of the site, would be effective? I don't really know what the interest-level is on those two these days, but it's obvious they set out to make a functional example of a new site. What it needs is some attention on the frontend level, and you've got yourself something conducive to building the community further.

Anyway, let's say it's all dandy and everyone comes along wanting to help. What do you do? How do people get access to the Azure area? Is it not time to just start something yet?

Although I take this reply to be a general invitation for anyone who sees themselves to be capable to organize and build a foundation for a new website, I'm unsure if you're just directly inviting me.

So I'll be clear, I'm probably not the soulmate you're looking for, despite my desire to sort this out to the best of my abilities. I don't really have the capacity to take on a side project of this level of importance along with my day job, even though I think I have the knowledge to set up a decent stack. At least, this is perceived to be important to me as this is basically the only game I play these days and I'd like to see it prosper. I am interested in participating, but I'd prefer to do that on my own terms if that's possible, without feeling as if I'm very responsible for the progress of the potential development.
